Amy Woolf's journey with MS-UK is a testament to the power of education, passion, and strategic location. As the Chief Executive of MS-UK, Amy has led the organisation through a decade of growth and impact, all while returning to her roots at the University of Essex.
From student to CEO
Amy, originally from Wivenhoe, completed her BA in Social and Cultural History at the University of Essex from 2003 to 2006.
Drawn by the University's strong reputation for teaching history, Amy's academic experience laid a firm foundation for her future career in the non-profit sector.
After graduation, Amy spent eight years away from the University, including seven years at The Children's Legal Centre. There, she progressed from receptionist to Business Support Manager, overseeing their national helpline, HR, office management, and health and safety.
A decade of leadership at MS-UK
In 2014, at just 32 years old, Amy joined MS-UK as its Chief Executive Officer. Her dedication to the role is evident. She said: "I am passionate about ensuring people affected by multiple sclerosis have access to the information and support they need to live healthier, happier lives.
“I believe in providing unbiased, non-judgemental services that enable people to make informed decisions about how they wish to manage their condition in a way that works for them."
A strategic home for MS-UK
Three years ago MS-UK found its new home at the Knowledge Gateway, which is located at the University of Essex.
The decision to locate the charity on the campus was driven by several factors:
Collaboration and growth
While the staff size has remained relatively stable at 19 employees, MS-UK has also found opportunities for collaboration within the Knowledge Gateway community.
The Innovation Centre has supported their fundraising efforts, and the charity has benefited from student volunteers assisting with administrative tasks.
Looking to the future
Amy sees the University of Essex's Colchester Campus as an integral part of MS-UK's future, as she explained: "Long term we hope to support thousands more people affected by multiple sclerosis. We see being based on campus as part of that future.”
As MS-UK continues to grow and impact lives, the Knowledge Gateway provides not just a location, but a supportive ecosystem for this vital charity's mission.
