Access to the curious, brave and bold.

The Knowledge Gateway is located within the University of Essex Campus and is part of our business eco-system, focused on helping businesses to fulfil their potential.

This is a campus where curiosity prevails, and where exploring new ways of thinking and pushing boundaries, isn’t just encouraged, it’s expected. Our University is focused on two core aims: excellence in teaching and excellence in research.

Student success is at the heart of the mission: supporting every student from every background to achieve outstanding outcomes; preparing our students to thrive in their future careers and benefit their future employers. Those employers could be you.

Our vision through the Knowledge Gateway is to create more than 2,000 high-value jobs within 15 years, by welcoming and attracting more and more start-ups, SMEs and global businesses who will benefit from campus co-location.

Based in the heart of the Colchester Campus, the Centre provides teaching and study space for the School of Life Sciences, and School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering plus the Department of Psychology. It’s also home to the Department of Mathematical Sciences, which combines an open-door policy with an open plan student work space to foster collaborative working and engagement between students and staff.

Essex Business School

Essex Business School champions responsible, ethical and sustainable business. From global corporations and the public sector, to SMEs, family businesses and start-ups, the School is interested in real-world business challenges.

Based on the Knowledge Gateway, the School’s landmark home is designed to reflect our commitment to responsible business practice in both our teaching and research. A stunning winter garden brings the outside indoors and creates a space that people can use all year round. The garden is designed to be a positive place for mental wellbeing and the plants themselves help to regulate air quality.

Our students benefit from a practical education in finance with our state-of-the-art Bloomberg Trading Floor. Students can access real financial data in almost real-time to help them build company profiles for their project work as well as experiencing how to execute trades and terminal commands.

Research institutes and centres

We have a global reputation in human rights, social scientific research and data analytics. Our flagship institutes bring together academics from across disciplines and departments to deliver research which offers significant practical insights and impact.

They engage with a wide range of external partners at a national and international level from NGOs and national governments through to the European Union and United Nations.

Our institutes and centres are a meeting place for ideas. A focus for our world-leading academics to share their expertise, to break through disciplinary boundaries and provoke new debates. The Knowledge Gateway provides a home to:

  • Institute for Analytics and Data Science (IADS) – We are conducting research into issues and challenges of data exploration and big data from a multitude of perspectives. IADS drives breakthroughs and innovation in a range of areas including technologies for management and transfer of big data; methodological and analytical methods of different types of applications from financial to biomedical; socio-economic aspects of data; and ethical, legal and human rights aspects of data.
  • Institute of Public Health and Wellbeing – Some health challenges seem impossible to overcome including rising obesity, infant and adult mortality, and a lack of fair access to mental health support. We believe good health and wellbeing for all is achievable by better addressing the multiple root causes of ill-health and by taking a collaborative, interdisciplinary and global approach.
  • ESRC Business and Local Government Data Research Centre – Also based at the Knowledge Gateway, this Centre forges links between stakeholders at all levels and helps them use data to find better solutions and support innovation.
