Linking business to innovation
Essex is number one in the UK for active Government-funded Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs). Bringing together businesses and universities, KTPs develop new products, services and technologies, driven by innovation and research.
Our Business Engagement team based on the Knowledge Gateway is leading more than 40 active KTPs involving SMEs through to multinationals. They draw on Essex strengths in data analytics, artificial intelligence, plant science and many other areas, with projects covering numerous sectors including telecommunications, finance, manufacturing and agriculture.
The University of Essex’s Business Engagement team was crowned the best in the UK at the illustrious Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Awards 2025 organised by Innovate UK. Essex won the Best Knowledge Base KTP Support Team Award.
Unlocking angel investment
Angels@Essex, the University of Essex’s early stage investment platform, has enjoyed a record year of growth with total equity raised by supported businesses increasing by more than 50% to £159 million.
The latest figures show total equity raised by the Knowledge Gateway-based team increased from £105.5 million to £159 million, representing a 51% year on year rise. In the 12-month period to December 2025, the number of businesses successfully raising investment also rose from 154 to 187, a 21% increase, while overall deal activity accelerated, with total deals growing from 251 at the start of the year to 313 by December, a 25% uplift.
